Do you eat burnt toast? Yes? Well, I do, sometimes. And if you do so, then stop it right now. Earlier, research proved that burnt toast causes cancer. The new warning issued by the experts suggests that there is a health risk when you eat burned food.

The high levels of the chemical acrylamide are linked to cancer. It is formed in several types of food when they are fried, roasted, or baked at high temperatures. It is a reaction that occurs from amino acids that are present in the food when it is cooked at high temperatures.

Acrylamide could be present in coffee, dried fruits, bread, and other products. Laboratory tests show that this chemical causes cancer in animals.

Acrylamide is a chemical that is usually found in starchy foods when they are baked or roasted at high temperatures. According to the Food and Drug Administration, you could cut the consumption of acrylamide.

When it comes to bread, it is recommended to toast it till it turns light brown. Make sure that you don’t eat burned areas or dark brown portions. It is also suggested not to keep or store potatoes in the fridge. This could increase acrylamide chemicals in the potato.

Keep potatoes in the cool and dark place. Also, cook potato products like french fries to a golden yellow. Brown areas might contain more acrylamide. You should also follow the instructions written on the pack when you buy packaged foods like roast potatoes. FDA chemist Lauren Robin says,

"Generally speaking, acrylamide is more likely to accumulate when cooking is done for longer periods or at higher temperatures."

How is the Food Industry Reducing the Acrylamide Levels in Food?

The food industry is implementing several measures in reducing acrylamide levels in certain foods. They are limiting acrylamide formation in foods and processes. It is hard to establish a safe level of acrylamide; therefore, everyone should avoid eating potatoes and other products that might contain acrylamide.

Eat a Healthier Diet & Properly Cooked Food

Experts recommend everyone not to eat foods that are high in fats and might cause severe diseases. They suggest you eat fruits, whole grains, nuts, and low-fat milk products, and cut the consumption of certain fried foods. Limit the acrylamide intake and follow a healthy diet plan.

Final Words

Boiling and steaming do not form acrylamide. So better you try to consume foods in a boiled or steamed form. You could also eat potato products, but make sure that you do not consume them frequently.

Also, if you eat french fries, then fry them till they turn yellow-golden. There have been several myths reported about burnt foods; however, not all the myths are proven to cause cancer.
